My taste turns to the street more than the red carpet, but I couldn’t resist Marion Cotillard’s gown at the Academy Awards. It’s Jean-Paul Gaultier’s mermaid look from Paris Fashion Week, sweeping piscine curves with a shimmer of sexy scales and fantail finish. Unlike Coco Rocha’s runway rendition in Paris, Marion needed no crutches to prop up the narrative.
Cotillard sounded genuinely overwhelmed in her acceptance speech, an authenticity that held up even after countless media repetitions of the sound bite. In the backstage Q&A, clutching Oscar as if Sigmund Freud would never mind, she was absolutely fetching when she sang a cappella to prove she could do more than just lip-sync Édith Piaf.
As the next winter storm rolls in, I think I’m getting mermaid fever. I’ve been humming that Woody Guthrie/Klezmatics tune all day long.
