Shimmering in the “Rainbow Body”

Rainbow Body (theme) by Christopher Theofanidis, Wesley Schulz, conductor.

I went to the Dayton Philharmonic last night, my first time inside the Schuster Center. The most interesting piece was “Rainbow Body” by Christopher Theofanidis, composed in 2000. The conductor said something in  his podium notes about the chant of Hildegard von Bingen .. I didn’t hear it last night, but after three rounds with this clip of the theme, I hear the chant ini ts quiet introduction.  I loved the articulation and shimmering of so many different sonic textures – contrabase clarinets  and bassoons, chimes, ambiguous pre-recorded crowd sounds.

Rainbow Body (ending) by Christopher Theofanidis, Wesley Schulz, conductor.

Here’s a longer take of the ending, conducted by Christopher Ocasek. His baton work is vividly gestural – I can see something of it.
