What is edX? An organization established by MIT and Harvard University that will develop an open-source technology platform to deliver online courses. EdX will support Harvard and MIT faculty in conducting research on teaching and learning on campus through tools that enrich classroom and laboratory experiences. At the same time, edX will also reach learners around the world through online course materials. The edX website will begin by hosting MITx and Harvardx content, with the goal of adding content from other universities interested in joining the platform. edX will also support the Harvard and MIT faculty in conducting research on teaching and learning. | What technology will edX use?

Last year when Andrew Ng, a computer science professor at Stanford University, put his machine-learning class online and opened enrollment to the world, more than 100,000 students signed up. | Now Ng and Daphne Koller, a Stanford colleague, are launching a company called Coursera to bring more classes from elite universities to students around the world for free online. | Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan will join Stanford. Two Venture capitalists are investing more than $15 million in the company.

Together with Harvard, MIT is launching a new non-profit called edX to do just that. Its backers hope to reach millions, maybe even a billion of students. | Harvard and MIT are moving ambitiously into online education, jointly offering free classes to anyone in the world who wants to take them. The courses will include video lessons, quizzes and instant feedback. Online instruction has had a mixed track record, but the universities hope evolving technology will make it a powerful new tool to expand educational opportunities worldwide.

I’ve canoed on Lake Superior for almost as many years as I’ve been losing eyesight. I return year after year like a migrating loon to learn the other side of a slow, uncertain process that we could call “going blind.” After 35 years with the lake as my teacher, I know what lies on the other side. What is a village? A small place, yes, as wide as the world, layered with histories and stories, where you can walk wherever you want to go. My vision of that place is Yellow Springs 2.0.

She herself may not have imagined it. Paul Strand probably didn’t give her much credit for making culture, either.
