Free Money With Patti Smith At Café Mouffe

The last CD to grace my stereo deck was Anne Sofie von Otter’s collection of Grieg Songs, which I return to like an Arctic tern when the snow is deep and the sun bright in a crystalline sky. Tonight some kind of chthonic leap of faith made me switch von Oter’s Grieg for Patti Smith’s Horses. Who’d think I could feel like I was 20 years old again and very punk? It started this morning when I heard a snippet of Gloria on NPR. Now I’m rummaging in the closet for the leather jacket with the ripped shoulder so I’ll look like I could walk into CBGB’s and not get rolled. Then all I’ll need is some Free Money.

Encore: There are so many great clips out there I should do another Mouffe featuring later Patti smith songs like Because the Night, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Dancing Barefoot, and Rock n’ Roll Nigger. But I’ll stick with the Horses groove here. There’s Kimberly, and live cuts of “Gloria” from 1979 and 2007. But the last word goes to Patti on My Generation: “We created it. Let’s take it over!”

Café Mouffe opens on Fridays. Please drop by for a listen and a chat. Sometimes the embedded videos don’t work here due to bandwidth constraints, but you’ll always find links to video sources in the notes. Try them. If you’re curious about the Mouffe, here’s the original idea behind it’s creation.

How could I omit Soul Kitchen?

LOVE Soul Kitchen! I came along a bit early for Patti Smith, missed the whole punk thing. Thanks!

Anne Sofie von Otter’s collection of Grieg Songs I know very well. Patti Smith I didn’t know at all. Thanks for the introduction.
